What's happening?
The Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant is located at Jones Road, Omaha and treats wastewater from Omaha, Point Wells and Matakana. The existing wastewater treatment plant is comprised of an aerated lagoon, oxidation pond, sand filters and UV disinfection. The treated wastewater is then discharged onto our land and the Omaha Beach Golf Course.
The resource consents that authorise discharges from the treatment plant need to be replaced.
Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant Consultative Group
As part of the process of replacing these resource consents, we invited the community to form a consultative group (Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant Consultative Group). The objective of the Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant Consultative Group is to participate and attempt to achieve consensus in respect of:
- The effects of the current and future discharges from the Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant on the environment, including but not limited to the Whangateau Harbour.
- The contributions of factors other than the discharges from the Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant that may be affecting the Whangateau Harbour and how these may change over time.
- Development of resource consent applications by Watercare that will enable the treatment and discharge of wastewater from the Omaha Wastewater Plant in an environmentally appropriate manner for a period of up to 35 years.
- Identification of other initiatives that may contribute in improving the quality of the Whangateau Harbour, noting that these may not be within the responsibility of Watercare.
Membership of the Consultative Group is open and includes representatives from mana whenua, Matakana Community Group, Omaha Beach Community, Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust, Point Wells Community & Ratepayers Association, Whangateau Harbourcare Group, Whangateau Residents and Ratepayers Association, as well as residents and neighbours of the Omaha Wastewater Treatment Plant.
