Hunua 4 watermain

This 30-kilometre pipeline through Manukau and Auckland cities will meet growing demand and increase resilience.

Start-finish: 2012-2020
Location: From Manukau to Khyber Pass, undertaken in 11 sections
Status: Sections one to 10 have been constructed and are in use. Construction of the final section of the Hunua 4 watermain, from Market Road to Khyber Pass, is scheduled to start in 2018.

What’s happening?

We are in the process of installing a large pipeline as part of the water network between Manukau and Khyber Pass.

Four major pipes carry water from the reservoirs on Redoubt Road in Manukau to many points around Auckland.

The new pipeline is named after  the Hunua Ranges – the source of 60 per cent of Auckland’s water.

What are the benefits?

Although the project is temporarily disruptive, it is vital to the future development of our city. The watermain will:

  • ensure that, as demand for water grows, we can continue to provide an uninterrupted, high-quality water supply
  • provide resilience in the event of a natural disaster
  • allow us to maintain our assets without major disruption to the water supply.

We thank all those affected for their understanding during these important works.
