The reservoirs at Maungawhau are all buried so as to not encroach on the natural beauty and scenery of the mountain. The redevelopment work will not alter the park in the long-term, however it may cause temporary disruption to some reserve facilities. Watercare is working closely with the council, Friends of Maungawhau and local iwi to ensure this disruption is minimised. Every effort is being made to ensure summit access will not be cut off, and walking tracks remain open, although slight diversions may occur at times.
The Mt Eden reservoir complex can store up to 27 million litres of water – enough to supply local suburbs for 24 hours. Its elevation means the water can be gravity fed to homes and businesses without using electricity-driven pump stations. One reservoir will be in operation at all times during the reconstruction project to ensure demands can be met and that Watercare is able to achieve our performance objectives and mitigate any business continuity risks.
